8 WEEK INTRODUCTION TO PRACTICAL AESTHETICS

Practical Aesthetics is a highly effective acting technique which enables the actor to consistently produce work that is as compelling and truthful to watch as it is exhilarating to perform. The technique by its very structure encourages the actor to habitually honor the writer’s intentions, avoid cliché interpretations, and remain outwardly focused. All of these elements combine to allow the story of the play/screenplay to be communicated to the audience in the most illuminating way.

The Introductory course is ideal for actors who would like a solid base from which to begin their creative work on any role. Actors will learn the steps of the script analysis technique and soon put them into practice by working on contemporary scenes with other actors. Focus throughout will be on analyzing the script, moment-to-moment work with the Repetition Exercise and basic performance technique. This class meets twice weekly for 8 weeks and provides a concise introduction to Practical Aesthetics. This course is suitable for actors with or without formal training.

SCENE CLASS

This class is for actors who have previously trained in Practical Aesthetics, either with PAA or at the Atlantic Theater Company Acting School in New York. At this level, students put their skills into practice by working on more challenging material and making their own directorial choices.

The class will focus on exploring scenes at the level of each individual actor, and encouraging actors to choose roles that will extend them beyond their "type" or safety zone. Included in the course will be work on scenes from different styles and periods, longer scenes, multiple character scenes, Q & A, and trouble-shooting specific problems encountered in the profession or with the technique.
